Impacts of Stress

Since last Monday, I’ve been writing on our facility’s intranet on a daily basis (you could say, ‘on the reg’), and I have been seeing more traffic than ever. We have a new initiative toward Employee Wellness, and I’m fortunate to be the one at the helm.
Dr. Doofenshmirtz Today’s topic was the Impacts of Stress, and here is what I shared:
A few notes on stress as we head into this week. Always good to be mindful of these things on ANY given Monday, for sure.

Impact of Stress:
70% of illness is related to stress
Estimated 75-90% of all visits to PCP are for stress related issues
#1 Health Concern in the US and in VHA

Definition of Workplace Stress:
“Harmful physical and emotional responses that occur when the requirements of the job do not match the capabilities, resources, or needs of the worker.” -National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health, 2008-

Many stress reduction classes ask participants to complete the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) at the beginning of the course. The PSS “is the most widely used psychological instrument for measuring the perception of stress.” Source Link (http://www.mindgarden.com/products/pss.htm). You can follow THIS LINK to complete the PSS and see how your results stack up against the national average. If your score indicates that you might need some help with reducing stress in your life, please feel free to use the EAP resources listed on the right side of this page.
