Recently I was invited to apply to be a brand ambassador for #EverlastNutrition. Several months ago I tried a sample of their Everlast Vegan Protien mix and thoroughly enjoyed it, so I was happy to be part of their team. Until then I’d had no idea that Everlast was into sports nutrition products; I thought they just had boxing supplies (gloves, punching bags, etc., not tape and peanuts). They still do that, but now they are also branching out into fitness products and some nutritional supplements. Everlast has been in business since 1910!!
Everlast Vegan Protein is based on pea, rice, and hemp proteins and is sweetened (only slightly!) with stevia glycoside. At first I was a bit leery regarding the stevia, but it hasn’t caused me any distress and the sweetness is not overpowering at all. Everlast Vegan Protein is “light vanilla flavor” which lends itself well to mixing with just about anything. You could even add some pumpkin spices to the mix! But I digress…I typically base my smoothies and shakes with soy milk; bovine milk and I have a long standing hate/hate relationship but you could give it a try. I usually add fat free plain yogurt and some cinnamon. Every now and again i’ll toss in some frozen blueberries or mango, but probably not nearly as often as I should.
I found, too, that Everlast Vegan Protein mixes very well with WATER. WHO KNEW?!! Yes, yes the packaging suggests “Mix 1 scoop (29 g) in 8-12 ounces of water or your favorite cold beverage or smoothie,” but it’s not like I automatically BELIEVE that. Turns out to be a good idea! The consistency of the water-based drink is thinner than when mixed with soy milk, even without the yogurt.
Don’t really have a way to make a smoothie, but still want to get some extra protein in? Here’s an idea that you can use at work: simply add half a scoop or so to a bowl of yogurt and granola! Mix well and enjoy. I do suggest that you eat it as soon as you can rather than just nibble at it over the course of a long conference call; it tends to thicken on standing, and soon your spoon will also be standing.
The Everlast Vegan Protein powder mixes very well and does not leave little bombs of powder laying around in there for you to choke on (come on, this HAS happened to you, too, right?). No grainy texture at all; the powder is very fine and wipes up easily.
Wait, wipes up? Yep. I’ve spilled it. And gotten it on top of the coffee maker. Wife: Umm…why is there powder ON TOP of the coffee maker? Me: Oh, uhhh…yea. That must be from me. Sorry about that. (grabs wipey from box on island, goes to clean coffee maker). Oh, I see you already cleaned it…
As high a review as I give Everlast Vegan Protein, I do have a couple of things that I don’t like about it. One of them is the packaging. I DO like the idea of the bag, as it takes up less and less space while you use it. However, the zip lock feature took a bit of getting used to, and sometimes when I compress it down some of it escapes with the air (see story above about coffee maker). The other con is that when i mix it with just soy milk, i need to use a bit more milk than i might want to drink in order to make it thinner. Does that make sense? Definitely lean closer to 12-16 ounces of soy milk/milk.
Truth be told, I had to think hard to come up with the cons.
